Two-day sale kicks off with fine art glass
It will be a wonderland of decorative arts, including many lots of fine art glass, during Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Feb. 8-9 Winter Auction.
THOMASTON, Maine — Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Feb. 8-9 Winter Auction will showcase a wonderland of decorative arts, featuring important collections of art glass and pottery, plus a large selection of paintings, sculpture, folk art and furniture.
The art glass category will sparkle with pieces by Loetz, Tiffany, Moser, Steuben, Orrefors, Baccarat and other important makers. Featured lots include a large Pallme-Konig ginger jar form threaded glass vase in blue and green (estimate $3,000-$4,000), a 12-inch diameter Loetz iridescent gold glass low bowl centerpiece with lobed standing rim ($2,000-$3,000) and a pair of circa 1840-60 Italian engraved and etched glass wedding goblets with double twist blue and white latticino stems ($2,000-$3,000). The auction is also offering a wide selection of late 19th and early 20th century light fixtures with art glass shades.
The porcelain/art pottery group includes fine pieces by Meissen, Brother Thomas, Rookwood, Dutch Delft, Marblehead, Nippon, Italian faience, Zsolnay and other important makers. A pair of 22-inch-tall cobalt majolica covered mantel urns by T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. is estimated at $2,500 to $3,000. The ceramics offerings will also include a large collection of early shaving mugs.
Among the 177 lots of paintings are a 1917 pastel on paper work titled “Repose” by Louis Kronberg (NY/France, 1872-1965) ($25,000-$30,000) and an oil on canvas painting depicting dark woods with a distant farm by John Appleton Brown (MA, 1844-1902) ($8,000-$12,000).
Among the folk art selection is a circa 1790 two-sided painted wooden tavern sign for the J. Read Inn ($15,000-$20,000), a Charles W. Dare dapple grey painted carousel horse ($10,000-$15,000) and a circa 1800 ship’s figurehead in form of a standing woman ($10,000-$15,000). Additionally, there will be an extensive collection of 37 hand-painted Russian lacquer boxes ($4,000-$5,000).
