Le Verre Francais vase may finish strong during 230-lot auction
A cameo glass vase of mottled yellow and orange overlaid, by Le Verre Francais, may steal the show during John Moran Auctioneers Sept. 23 Antiques and Fine Art Auction.
PASADENA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers will open its fall season with a 230-lot sale on September 23.
The Antiques and Fine Art Auction will showcase a large selection of pottery, glass and
furniture from the Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Arts and Crafts movements, including several definitive pieces by top makers, more than 80 works by California and American plein air painters, as well as 19th century Louis XV and XVI style furnishings, clocks and decorative objects, among other things.

Fans of French Art Nouveau glass will find sublime examples, including a large baluster-form vase by Cristallerie de Pantin, decorated with long-stemmed irises in iridescent blue and green (estimate $3,000-$5,000), and a cameo glass vase by Le Verre Francais of mottled yellow and orange overlaid, in orange shaded to brown ($4,000-$6,000).
Leading a group of 15 pieces of Amphora pottery is a 27-inch-high centerpiece bowl featuring a favorite Art Nouveau theme: the female figure; the piece carries a presale estimate of $2,000 to $3,000. A richly decorated double-gourd vase featuring the “Semiramis’’ pattern of gilt-edged moths and spider webs centered by “Grés Bijoux’’ (porcelain jewels), and a lovely example of a Riessner, Stellmacher and Kessel “Princess Elizabeth’’ portrait vase are offered with estimates of $600 to $800, and $1,000 to $1,500, respectively.
A counterpoint to these fanciful Art Nouveau pieces is a group of American art pottery bowls and vases by Rookwood and Fulper. Estimates for the seven vases range from $300 to $700.
Other expected standout pieces of this sale include:
• Steinway & Sons Model B grand piano, circa 1901, bearing serial number 99,999, features a painted underside of the piano lid. ($30,000-$40,000).
• Large and ornate Meissen porcelain ewer with Neptune, sea-nymphs and cherubs ($5,000-$8,000).<br.
• Aubusson tapestry depicting frolicsome figures playing at blind man’s bluff in a verdant landscape ($2,000-$3,000).
