Art Deco diamond bracelet clasps $14,400
An eye-catching ladies’ platinum, diamond, and sapphire Art Deco bow bracelet, which realized $14,400, was one of several unique pieces of jewelry to change hands during Kaminski Auctions’ Jan. 18 auction.
BEVERLY, Mass. — Kaminski Auctions officiated the sale of the estate of Mary Alchian of Palm Springs, California, on January 18. Alchian was a Palm Springs businesswoman and jeweler with a discerning eye for fine jewelry and California art. Her estate was sold to benefit an educational institution in the Palm Springs area.
A vivid watercolor by Ettore Simonetti (Italian, 1857-1909), titled “Market Scene” and,
signed lower right was the top lot of the sale achieving a price of $21,600 against an estimate of $3,000 to $4,000.
Alchian’s jewelry collection included Cartier pieces and Cartier collectors were out in force. A pair of ladies’ 18-karat yellow gold earrings, signed Cartier, with 18 natural emeralds and 16 diamonds was hammered down at $20,400, while an unusual Cartier Art Deco 14-karat yellow gold compact with diamonds and sapphires, marked A1170 sold for $5,400.
The collection of jewelry offered in the estate included many unusual Art Deco pieces; an eye-catching ladies’ platinum, diamond, and sapphire bow bracelet sold for $14,400.
Numerous phone bidders and collectors online vied for a desirable “T.B. Starr” circa 1920 to 1930s Art Deco Chinese carved jade pin. Set in platinum with a circular diamond border and cabochon rubies, it was valued at $2,500 to $4,500, but fierce competition drove the piece to $11,400.
A pair of Art Deco ladies diamond and platinum drop earrings with 20 diamonds sold for $6,600.
More eclectic items in the collection included a circa 1920s ladies’ 18-karat white gold, pearl, and diamond purse with 52 diamonds, which achieved a price of $11,400; a 19th century harp by the Charles Lindeman Company, Chicago, numbered 800 sold for $4,800.
Lots from other estates achieved good prices as well. An English sterling silver lidded wine cooler with grape motif, hallmarked for London 1826/27, by makers Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard that sold for $14,400.
