More than 1,250 jewelry lots set to sparkle in Chicago

CHICAGO — Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct three Important Jewelry and Fine Timepieces

sales on September 16, 17 and 18. The three-day event presents an impressive single-owner sale, Important Jewelry from the Estate of Rita Dee Hassenfeld, which will occur one day prior to the regularly scheduled Important Jewelry auction of mixed consignments.

In addition to live, absentee and phone bids, Internet bidding will be facilitated by LHLive.com and Bidsquare.com.

Major themes across both jewelry sales are the comprehensive and noteworthy collections of signed pieces. Significant in both volume and individual quality will be collections offered by maisons such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Belperron, Verdura, Harry Winston, David Webb, Raymond Yard, Seaman Schepps and many others. Aside from the signed collections, the offerings at large will provide an exciting series for bidders across many collecting categories.

From the estate of Rita Dee Hassenfeld approximately 250 lots will be presented. Including everything from significant signed pieces and important diamonds to playful uses of colored stones, the collection is characterized by both elegance and a sense of whimsy.

Hassenfeld was an accomplished ballerina in her youth and later a dedicated philanthropist and humanitarian. She married the late Harold Irwin Hassenfeld, a member of the founding family of Hassenfeld Brothers, now known as Hasbro Industries (manufacturer of Monopoly, Mr. Potato Head, Nerf, Play-Doh and Trivial Pursuit).

A standout item of Hassenfeld’s collection is an important and superb Art Deco platinum, emerald, diamond, onyx and enamel lapel watch / necklace by Cartier. Another is an impressive platinum and diamond ring by Harry Winston, containing a pear shape brilliant cut diamond weighing approximately 9.12 carats of D color and VS2 clarity.

The single-owner sale will be followed on September 17 by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ regularly scheduled fall jewelry sale, which will offer more than 1,000 lots. Featuring several private estates, the sale contains multiple vintage works by celebrated designers in discrete collections showcasing the breadth of their talent. For example, 13 fine jewels by Raymond Yard and six examples of 1940’s Verdura will be available in the sale.
