Important glass designer’s collection up for bids April 29

Winslow Anderson was no stranger to high quality glass and china. In addition to a storied career as a prolific designer for Blenko Glass and Lenox China, the late Mr. Anderson amassed an extensive collection, including a number of pieces that were featured in museum exhibitions. Items from his collection are slated to sell April 29, during an auction offered by Jeffery S. Evans & Associates.

MT. CRAWFORD, Va. — Antiques, fine and decorative arts, and 20th century design will all be showcased during Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates’ April 29 auction. It features items amassed by an esteemed glass designer.

The large auction, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET, is highlighted by the collection of the late Winslow Anderson (1917-2007) of Milton, West Virginia. Anderson was an important glass designer at Blenko Glass (1947-1953) and Lenox China (1953-1980). He also studied painting and drawing with Hans Hofmann and other influential American artists. This auction includes a large selection of Anderson’s artwork as well as works he collected in Latin America, many examples of his Blenko and Lenox designs, both prototype and commercial pieces, among others. Much of the Anderson material was the focus of several museum exhibitions.

Chinese Ceramics Another Interest of Glass Designer Anderson

Rare Asian material, featuring a choice assortment of Chinese ceramics and Oriental rugs, forms another strong portion of the auction. Noteworthy in this segment of the sale are a Yongzheng period guan-type “Eight Horses of Muwang” vase and a fine Star Ushak carpet fragment, probably dating to the 17th or 18th century, the latter being deaccessioned by The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) to benefit the collections and acquisitions funds. Early carved jade objects, export porcelain and several articles bearing ox-blood glaze, as well as a bronze Guan Yu War God figure, will also be offered.

The sale will also feature fine antique and vintage jewelry, rare Asian material, oriental rugs, and a large assortment of art glass. The art glass category includes an outstanding group of late 19th-century cameo vases, rare Tiffany vases, and other desirable examples from various makers such as Thomas Webb & Sons, Daum Nancy, Lalique, Galle, Quezal, and others. A select assortment of studio glass will also be offered, along with English and European furniture and accessories; paintings, prints, and statuary; sterling silver; Arts & Crafts and art pottery; and 18th and 19th century porcelain.
