Exploring Star Wars action figures appeal
A new film in the unparalleled Star Wars series is on the big screen, carrying on a legacy that began 40 years ago. A legacy rich with collectible popularity.
Few relationships in the pop culture universe have the staying power that is apparent between Star Wars and its fans.
Jedi on the Mind
Case in point, today (Dec. 15, 2017) is the official opening of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". It is the latest in the series, which according to cinema experts includes six 'episodic motion pictures'. Still other experts say there are 13 films in total. I guess it’s all about how you define the parameters. However, one thing fans appear to agree with is the Star Wars franchise is out of this world. In a remarkably inspiring manner.

It began, ‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…,” or 40 years to be exact. From memorable music and captivating characters to an ‘other worldly’ battle of good versus evil and ongoing self-discovery, the Star Wars saga is incomparable. One indication of this is the plentiful and popular examples of collectible Star Wars memorabilia.
In November of 2017, items from one the most comprehensive collection of Star Wars collectibles, that of Russell Branton, came to auction through Hake’s Americana & Collectibles. During the sale, a record was set when a 1978 Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi double-telescoping action figure, in its original blister card package, sold for $76,700.

Furthermore, another 1978 Star Wars action figure, Luke Skywalker, also in an original blister package commanded $50,622. This sale is more than five times the action figure’s low estimate; and a Anakin Skywalker prototype action figure, circa 1985, from the film “Star Wars: The Power of the Force” attracted aggressive bidding that drove the final bid to $34,981 before the gavel fell. That was more than three times the low estimate.
Whether you’re a long-time collector of vintage Star Wars action figures or simply a fan of the Star Wars franchise, one book that aptly suits and celebrates the appreciation of this cinematic standout is “The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Star Wars Action Figures, 1977-1985.”
