1910 Märklin carousel may fetch $30K in joint auction

The fourth joint auction between Pook & Pook and Noel Barrett, slated for March 24, features a painted tin clockwork musical carousel, circa 1910, that could bring upwards of $30,000.

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. — On Saturday, March 24, 2018, Pook & Pook, Inc., Auctioneers and Appraisers and Noel Barrett Antiques and Auctions, Ltd. will host their fourth jointly held auction.

Military Soldiers to Märklin Toys

The Antique Toy Auction will begin at 10 a.m. in the Pook & Pook, Inc. gallery, 463 East Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The sale includes an array of military figures, clockwork toys, cast iron vehicles, and advertising signs, among other objects. In addition to in-person bidding in the gallery, phone and absentee bidding will be accepted, as well as internet bidding via Bidsquare.com and LiveAuctioneers.com.

Military Toy Figures Occupy 150+ Lots

A significant group of military figures — more than 150 lots — will cross the block. These painted composition wartime soldiers includes Lineol and Elastolin/Hausser brand items. These lots include soldiers representing the Revolutionary War, WWI and WWII. The impressive variety of military figures will include in-action soldiers and seated soldiers. In addition, there are models with gas masks, rifles, and binoculars. There are also wounded men. Additional pieces include other essential wartime characters such as nurses, dogs, musicians, and horses. Other important wartime minutia on sale includes trenches, bomb blasts, warships, fighter planes, tanks, flamethrowers, howitzers and battery-operated search lights. Many of the lots also include the original boxes.

A diverse selection of European and American toys will be on offer. This includes Märklin toys such as an Electric Tramway trolley, train station and a street lamp. These pieces are from the Owl’s Tale Shop Christmas Window Collection. Also from the Owl’s Tale Collection is a cast iron and tin Ferris Wheel clockwork bank ($2,000-$3,000). Plus, a scarce Märklin painted tin clockwork musical carousel enters the sale with an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000. Among the selection of whimsical toys in the sale is a hand-propelled, carved and painted horse velocipede, circa 1870, carrying an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000.

Additional exciting and nostalgic playtime essentials include a variety of painted figures from the Philadelphia-based Schoenhut toy company, including a Jolly Jiggers dancing toy, circa 1903, in excellent condition with an estimate of $1,200 to $1,600.
