Decorative arts, calligraphy, baskets in the spotlight of online auction Jan. 19
The Jan. 19th online auction through Pook & Pook features an eclectic mix, from American decorative arts and porcelain to gameboards, and pewter.
Pook & Pook, Inc. is hosting the first Online Only sale of the company's calendar year with all online auction bidding taking place on Bidsquare. The sale starts at 10am on Monday, January 19th, 2015.
The sale is peppered with an array of American decorative arts and accessories,
including redware (antique and modern), stoneware, weathervanes, quilts, coverlets, carpets, textiles, glass, tin, carvings, copper, pottery, porcelain, baskets, a decoy, windmill weights, walking sticks, Christmas decorations, spongeware, spatterware, toys, doll/children’s furniture, lamps, gameboards, hooked rugs, wrought iron, woodenware, pewter, books, etc.
A Rohrer’s Lancaster Pennsylvania “Wild Cherry Tonic” amber bottle is expected to bring $100-150. A Staffordshire blue transfer “Millennium” platter is predicted to bring $150-250. An inlaid mahogany pincushion sewing clamp with a drawer sitting atop a Greek key border is estimated at $100-$150. A Federal style brass and wire firefender comes with a reasonable estimate of $150-$250. A fun item set to sell at the upcoming auction is a painted pine battery operated stage with clowns ($100-$150). A fascinating wooden model of a European church is sure to catch more than a few collectors’ eyes with its $60-$80 estimate. Christmas may be over, but the ten lots of kugel ornaments should still draw some interest including a ruby red egg example ($80-$120) and a silver grape bunch kugel ($100-$200).
Some unusual lots include a Dimock Gould & Co. Eureka paper pail ($80-$120), a tin fish-form mold ($40-$70), and a carved mahogany female torso ($40-$60). An interesting painted pine foundry mold will be offered with an estimate of $150-$250. It is inscribed F.X. Hooper Co. Inc., Glenarm, MD USA. A large collection of stoneware will cross the block including a New York stoneware crock impressed J&S Hart Oswego Falls with cobalt tulip decoration ($150-$250). Two aqua glass fish floats carry an estimate of $100-$150. Originally invented in Norway, glass fishing floats were once used by fishermen all over the world to keep their nets and lines afloat. They are still sometimes found floating in the ocean or washed up on beaches.
Several lots of Native American material are set to cross the block. These include an Inuit whalebone carving of a polar bear ($200-$300), pottery, (Acoma, Hoopa, Santa Clara, etc.), basketry, soapstone carvings, needleworks, sand drawings, turquoise and silver jewelry, beaded material, textiles, etc. Of particular interest is an earth pigment on Masonite of a crescent moon by Pablita Velarde (American 1918-2006). This accomplished Native American artist created natural pigments for her paintings from rocks and minerals that she ground herself.
A number of pieces of art will draw in bidders. Everything from paintings to silhouettes to pen and ink calligraphy will cross the block. A primitive oil on canvas piece depicting a coaching scene is expected to bring $150-$250. Several examples of fraktur will be offered. A lovely oil on canvas bucolic landscape signed A. Leslie Leffray depicts five cows by a river with a farm and bridge in the background ($40-$70). A pastel on paper winter landscape with a farmhouse and barn by Jerry Quier (American 20th c.) is expected to bring $100-$150. A detailed portrait of an unnamed woman wearing a bonnet tied in a pink bow at her chin is estimated at $300-500. Two Andrew Wyeth lithographs will cross the block, one titled “The Corner” ($40-$80) and one titled “Zoar Valley” ($60-$80). Several color lithographs of birds by John Gould & Henry C. Richter will be offered. A variety of furniture is spattered throughout the auction including footstools, blanket chests, stands, a jelly cupboard, chairs, a settle, chests of drawers, chest on frames, work tables, games tables, a dressing table, a hanging corner cupboard, a hanging cupboard, settees, miniature furniture, slant front desks, a sofa, a mule chest, a semi-tall chest of drawers, dining tables, a Pembroke table, a feed bin, machinist chests, work desks, a corner cupboard, drysinks, tall case clocks, a cupboard top, a spool cabinet, a rocker, plant stands, etc.
A New England painted pine settle bench is expected to bring $400-$800 with its red stained surface. A painted pine dower chest, dated 1782, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania is anticipated to bring $300-$500. Another Lancaster, Pennsylvania painted pine dower chest, this one dated 1766, carries a $500-$800 estimate with its architectural façade adorned with potted flowers, inscribed “Catharina Huber”. A New England pine semi-tall chest from the late 18th c. that retains traces of an old red stain is expected to bring $300-$500. A painted pine farm table measuring 95 ½” long will cross the block ($300-
$500). A Pennsylvania Federal walnut three-part dining table from the 1800’s carries a $500-$1,000 estimate. An oak telephone table from the early 1900’s sports a reasonable price tag of $40-$60. A beautiful Pennsylvania painted pine wardrobe from the 1800’s that retains an old red and brown surface is sure to catch a few decorators’ eyes with its $400-$800 estimate. Several contemporary pieces of painted furniture by Bryce Ritter will be sold including a painted pine cupboard ($400-$600), a painted pine Dutch cupboard measuring an impressive 71 ½” w. ($500-$1,000), a pine work stand ($100-$200), etc.
