Oil painting by former Disney artist may command $20,000
Artworks by former Disney background artist Eyvind Earle, are among the items coming to auction July 9-10 through Don Presley Auctions. One of Earle’s works, “Horse Country” is expected to vie for top lot.
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Approximately 600 pieces of art from a longtime collector and 15 works
deaccessioned by Bowers Museum in Santa Ana will be featured on the first day of Don Presley Auction Co.’s sale July 9-10.
Charles Reincke of Orange County, Calif., is a widely known dealer in the West who specializes in antique stereo view cards. His personal collection, however, consists of modern and contemporary art – oils, watercolors, etchings, prints, lithographs, serigraphs, engravings, mixed media and animation cels.
“For over a quarter of a century Charles Reincke has been quietly amassing art by many of the world’s leading artists,” said Don Presley. “He is now 83 years old and feels it is time to sell.”
Presley considers an original oil painting by New York-born artist Eyvind Earle (1916-2000) as the best work in the collection. Horse Country, which has a presale estimate of $20,000-$21,000, depicts livestock grazing in a verdant valley with blue mountains in the background. Known for his unique landscapes, Earle worked as a background artist for Disney for 16 years. He was responsible for the styling, background and colors for the Disney animated feature Sleeping Beauty and gave the movie its magical, medieval look. Earle returned to painting full-time in 1966 and kept working until the end of his life.
There are also about 15 serigraphs by Earle in the auction.
Famous names in the collection are Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Degas, Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Toulouse Lautrec, Dali and Klee.
The collection, which Reincke acquired primarily at auctions, includes many lithographs, engravings, gravures and bookplates. There are approximately 100 animation cels and other works from Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, De Patie Freleng and Peanuts.
All but about 50 of the works are framed. Presley noted that starting bids on the art are low and only a few have reserves.
Deaccessioned by the Bowers Museum are works by Dan Namingha, Robert Draper, Vaclav Vytlacil, Alexandra Nechita, Cuca Romley, Lucille Datson, Barry, Lee Hughes, Kenneth Freeman and Manuel Lepe.
Day two of Presley’s auction consists of 450 lots of decorative art – consignments from affluent Southern California communities such as Newport Beach, Beverly Hills, Palos Verdes and Woodland Hills. Featured will be Lalique glass, bronzes, clock sets, European porcelains, Chinese antiques, jade, fine jewelry and watches.
The sale will take place at Don Presley Auction Co.’s gallery at 2202 S. Main St., Santa Ana, Calif. Selling will begin both days at noon.
