‘Le Grand Jockey’ may be auction front runner

A vintage bronze sculpture of a jockey atop a horse may gallop away with top lot status during Cordier Auction’s Feb. 11.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Old World will meet new school at Cordier Auction’s February 11 Winter Antique and Fine Art Auction. Lots in this sale include a sleek and detailed 'Le Grand Jockey' sculpture, American and Continental furniture, sterling, and fine clocks, among others.

The auction will be held at the Cordier showroom, 1500 Paxton Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to in-person bidding, absentee and phone bids will be accepted, as well as internet bidding via www.cordierauction.hibid.com.

'Le Grand Jockey' Sculpture May See $7K

A portfolio titled “Picasso de 1916 a 1961” by Jean Cocteau features a colophon signed by both Cocteau and Picasso, and is expected to bring $4,000 to $6,000. Other artwork on offer includes a finely cast bronze titled "Le Grand Jockey" by Isidore-Jules Bonheur ($5,000-$7,000) and a Violet Oakley sketch entitled “The Spirit of Ministry” ($2,000-$3,000).

Also featured will be a 204ozt sterling tray from Goldsmiths and Silversmiths of London, circa 1904, which carries an estimate of $3,000 to $4,000. The selection of jewelry includes a 2.2 carat old mine cut diamond solitaire ring, with an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000; as well as an antique citrine bracelet, carrying an estimate of $600 to $800. Also on offer is an 18k and gemstone Bucherer ball watch, and 13 vintage wristwatches, including a Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust, with an estimate of $1,500 to $2,500.

Collectibles to be offered in this sale will include an antique fire pumper toy ($3,000-$5,000), and a Leica camera outfit ($3,000-$5,000). An 1893 Rookwood sterling overlay vase will also come before bidders ($2,000-$2,500). Also, a Sioux child’s beaded vest with American flags ($3,000-$5,000) stands out among a collection of baskets, beaded moccasins, and pottery.

A Victorian marble top table carries an estimate of $800 to $1,000, while a French marquetry sideboard comes before bidders with an estimate of $500 to $1,000. A series of clocks in this sale includes an early 19th century Jacob and Bernard Hendel tall case clock ($4,000-$6,000); a Seth Thomas parlor calendar shelf clock #9 ($1,000-$1,200); and a Royal Vienna porcelain shelf clock ($1,000-$2,000) .
