Energetic Bacchanalian art could top $9K

A 19th century painting of a a Bacchanalian feast, painted by noted Belgian artist Henri-Jules Corneille Groux may command $9,000 at an auction to be offered by John Moran Auctioneers, July 28.

PASADENA, Calif. — Closely following denouement of their two-session June auction event, John Moran Auctioneers is once again gearing up for a Decorative Art Auction – this one focusing on traditional Continental furnishings and décor as well as European paintings and works on paper.

The July 28 auction to be held at the Pasadena Convention Center, 3000 East Green St., Pasadena,

California, beginns at 3 p.m. PDT. In addition, absentee and telephone bids will be accepted, and Internet bidding will be facilitated by Bidsquare and LiveAuctioneers.

Smaller decorative items, including art glass, silver and bronzes comprise the majority of the sale, with gems at all price points to be found both in the catalogued and uncatalogued discovery sessions.
Fine art selections include works primarily by European artists, with a handful of pieces by American painters rounding out the consignments.

A romantic, large-scale pastel depicting a nude woman seated in a bathhouse by Yugoslavian-born painter Alfred V. Pirkhert (1887-1971), is expected to bring $2,000 to $3,000 at auction. “Bacchanal” by Henri-Jules Corneille Groux (1867-1930 Belgian), an engrossing, high-energy painting of a Bacchanalian feast is offered with a $7,000 to $9,000 estimate. American works of fine art include watercolors by Emil Kosa, Jr. (1903-1968) and Milford Zornes (1908-2008).

The work by Kosa, titled “Near Tasco (sic)” is expected to bring $2,000 to $3,000. Milford Zornes’s “Back Bay – Newport,” is offered for $800 to $1,200; the scene of figures and vessels in a harbor is cheerily depicted in primary hues of bright blue and pastel yellow.

In addition, bidders will be presented with art glass, figural bronzes, a few pieces of Art & Craft furniture, and sterling silver flatware, among others.
