SOLD! Fine, decorative arts at New Year’s Day Auction
Nadeau’s Auction Gallery’s annual New Year’s Day fine and decorative arts auction broke seven figures when it achieved more than $2.35 million in sales.
WINDSOR, Ct. — Nadeau's Auction Gallery's annual New Year's Day event in Windsor, Connecticut, once again broke seven figures when it achieved more than $2.35 million in sales. The fine and decorative arts auction presented over 700 lots of museum-quality paintings, furniture, decorative arts, and jewelry and delighted bidders with surprises and some bargains.
Fine art at auction
Fine art from noted artists, and those portraying international icons, were many of the top lots in the sale. Lot #667, Francis Barraud's (1856-1924) oil on canvas His Master's Voice took best of show, selling for $59,375 on its $3,000-5,000 estimate. This Edison phonograph painting, originally titled Dog Looking and Listening to a Phonograph," was discovered in a Long Island estate.
Lot #450, Louis Comfort Tiffany's (1848-1933) orientalist Woman Reading by Adobe House was estimated $10,000-15,000 and made $20,400. And lot #576, Julian Falat's (1853-1929) oil on canvas, Winter Landscape with River and Moose more than tripled its low estimate, selling at $17,080.
Fine furniture at auction
In the furniture offerings of the fine and decorative arts auction: Lot #330, a signed Philip and Kelvin LaVerne "Chan Li" cabinet sold for $37,200. This masterpiece was decorated with patinated bronze, acid etched pewter, and an enameled Asian illustration of people enjoying the outdoors.
Lot #684, a classical French Empire style writing table more than doubled its high estimate to make $14,400.
And two Boulle lots from the estate of Kenneth Jay Lane far surpassed their pre-auction estimates. The first was lot #549, a desk with a rectangular top and brass ball feet. It realized $27,000 on its $3,000-5,000 estimate.
And the second was lot #548, a marble top writing table with one drawer and scrolled square legs. It sold for an astonishing $27,450 on its $500-$1,000 estimate.
