1,500-lot single owner collection coming to auction May 29-31
The late William (Bill) Lane spent much of his life searching for items to add to his collection of collectibles, a collection which includes more than 1,500 items. May 29-31 Lane’s family will work with Tilman Auctions to fulfill the late businessman/collector’s wish that the collectibles go to people who others to cherish them as he did.
RICHMOND, Va. — A diverse collection of more than 1,500 items amassed by the late William (Bill) Lane will come to auction May 29-31.
Tilman Auctions will present the three-day, no-reserve auction featuring the collection of Lane, a
business man and well-known collector in the region, who was affectionately known by several names (Cowboy Bill, Wild Bill, and Cowboy Trading Co.). Lane, who many thought resembled Wild Bill Cody, passed away in October 2014. He was a lifelong collector of pop western memorabilia, vintage bicycles, tricycles, pedal cars, scooters, advertising signs, clocks, early movie posters, and Walt Disney collectibles, among other things. He was also the founder and owner of Commercial Caulking Co. in Richmond, which is now operated by Lane's son, David.
Gene Autry was a particular favorite of Bill’s.He searched for 53 years for a rare Gene Autry Tricycle and finally found one. It's believed there are only four in existence: one in California, two in a museum, and the one he had.
