Unique collector cars bring strong prices at auction

One-of-a-kind collector cars bring strong prices at auctions hosted by such firms as H&H Classics and Barrett-Jackson.

During Barrett-Jackson’s 48th annual Scottsdale Auction, Jan. 12-20, 2019, the firm sold more than 1,800 vehicles for more than $118 million. The sale, held at WestWorld of Scottsdale, achieved a 99.74 percent sell-through rate. In addition to the collector cars, more than 1,500 pieces of automobilia brought in over $4.05 million.

A star of the sale, ‘Eleanor’ from the 1990 movie “Gone In 60 Seconds,” wowed bidders. The 1967 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback (Lot #1437) sold for $385,000.

Another collector car landing in the top 10 is a hot little red 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split-window Resto-Mod Coupe. It sold for the same price: $385,000.

In remarkable auto sales over the pond, Britain’s H&H Classics auction on Feb. 2 saw the 1975 George Barris “Snakepit” Dragster sell for $67,082. Designed by the same man who designed the Batmobile, the Dragster was the top earner in the auction.

Perhaps the most surprising result of a car auction in some time: A 1978 Ford Fiesta 950 hatchback with only 141 miles on the odometer sold for $19,353. The nearly $20,000 auction result is reportedly a world record for a Fiesta.
