ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Several collections of Brilliant Period Cut Glass featuring various pieces will come up for bid May 12. Woody Auction will hold a major public auction at the Crowne Plaza St. Louis Airport Hotel. The sale starts promptly at 9:30 a.m. CST.

“This auction is the continuation of the Bill Chandler collection, boasting many important pieces, and will also include the addition of the Stanley and Ruth Gotliffe collection out of New Jersey,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction, based in Douglass, Kansas. “We believe attendees will be surprised and wowed by the amount of quality color cut to clear glass. Many large pattern trays will also be offered.”

As with all sales throughWoody Auction, every item goes to the highest bidder, without reserve.

Pair of Brilliant Cut Glass Vases Piquing Interest

An example of the overall quality of the catalog is visible in lot 200: a pair of Brilliant Period Cut Glass (BPCG) vases by Dorflinger – one cranberry and one green, both cut to clear – in a pattern featuring engraving with floral with hobstar, vesical and nailhead diamond highlights. The pattern of the vases matches exactly a vase featured in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a gift to the museum by Dorflinger & Sons in 1903. The exceptionally rare vases each stand 11 3/4 inches tall.

Another star lot in the vase category promises to be the rare and colorful 10-inch-tall BPCG turquoise cut to clear vase with crosscut diamond, strawberry diamond and fan motif and scalloped hobstar foot.

Other vases of interest will include a scarce example in the Rose Diamond pattern by Meriden, 11 3/4 inches tall with a hobstar base and step-cut neck, of exceptional quality; and a BPCG pedestal crescent vase, signed Libbey in the Herringbone pattern, with a large scalloped petticoat hobstar foot. In addition, the vase, at 12 1/2 inches tall, is the largest size in one of the rarest shapes.

Also up for bid will be a 17 1/2 inch by 10 1/4 inch BPCG ice cream tray, signed Taylor Brothers in the Bellevue pattern, of top quality.
